Emil Racovita was a well-known Romanian explorer and biologist. During the years 1879 - 1899, having the position of the naturalist, he took part in an expedition on the ship “Belgica” in Antartica, together with the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. On that occasion he has gathered an ample scientific material regarding the fauna and flora in the Antartic area. He is the founder of the bio- spelaelogy, which he defined as a science that studies life in the underground environment, especially the one in the caves. Concerning the biological matters, Racovita defended the evolutionist theory, which considers that man has developed in a long period of time, starting from certain species of monkey . In 1920 he founded the first institute of bio-spelaelogy in the world in Cluj and he taught the first class of general biology in Romania. |
