Spain
attempted to enter the European Community (EC) as early as the 1960's but
its admission was delayed for decades for two
main reasons: political ( the country's situation arising out of
the authoritarian government under Franco) and economical (disparity
between the country and the EC members ). In
1982, the Spanish Socialist Worker's Party (PSOE) came to power and played
a crucial role leading the country down the road to Community membership.
One of the essential objectives of the party was attaining EC membership,
which they associated with modernization. Spain entered simultaneously with Portugal in 1986. Overall, Spain's entry into the European Community has helped narrow the gap between the country's standard of living and that of the other Member States. Furthermore, EC membership has allowed Spain to emerge as a strong negotiator among the member states. Finally, it can be argued that the EU has advanced and continues to solidify democracy within the country. |
